Gorillas, volcanoes and a country that rebuilt itself
Rwanda offers the most comfortable route to mountain gorillas: Volcanoes National Park is roughly two hours from Kigali, the trails are shorter than Uganda's, and the lodges at the park edge are among the best on the continent.
That access is priced accordingly — permits are the most expensive in the region. What you get for it is a shorter, more certain trek and a country that is strikingly easy to travel in.
Beyond the gorillas, Nyungwe Forest holds chimpanzees and a canopy walkway, and Lake Kivu is a genuinely restful place to end a trip.
