Gorillas, chimpanzees and the source of the Nile
Uganda holds roughly half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas, in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Permits are cheaper than Rwanda's and the forest is larger, though the trekking is steeper and wetter.
It is also the best place in Africa for chimpanzees — Kibale's habituated communities give near-guaranteed sightings — and Queen Elizabeth National Park has tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector.
Uganda rewards travellers who want primates and forest as much as plains game, and it pairs naturally with Rwanda.

Best time to visit
June to August and December to February are driest, which matters more here than elsewhere — gorilla trails become genuinely difficult in heavy rain.
