Three thousand years of continuous history, and a landscape that most people have no mental image of at all until they stand in it.
This is a cultural journey with two days of highland trekking built in. It pairs well with a short Kenyan safari for travellers who want wildlife too.

Arrive Addis Ababa
Met on arrival. Afternoon at the National Museum, including the Lucy skeleton.

To Bahir Dar
Fly north to Lake Tana. Afternoon boat trip to the island monasteries.

Blue Nile Falls
Morning at the falls, afternoon at leisure on the lakeshore.

To Gondar
Drive north to the royal enclosure and its seventeenth-century castles.

Into the Simiens
Drive into the national park. Afternoon walk along the escarpment among gelada troops.

Simien trekking
A full day walking the escarpment rim, with drops of over a thousand metres beside you.

To Lalibela
Fly to Lalibela. Afternoon at the north-western group of rock churches.

Lalibela's churches
The remaining churches, including Bet Giyorgis. Best visited early, during a service.

Return
Fly to Addis Ababa for onward international connections.
